Born and raised in Georgia, Sydney began exploring and learning about its expansive, marshy coasts in 2017 when she worked with The Nature Conservancy and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources in Brunswick, GA. During that time, her interest was continually piqued by what is now the focal point in her career: marine bivalves!
Now with a PhD from the University of Florida, Sydney has been studying mussels, oysters, and their salt marsh habitats on and around Sapelo Island since 2019 while developing a strong passion for sustainable shellfish aquaculture. She holds a faculty position at the University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant in Brunswick, GA, focusing on ecosystem restoration and community resilience to coastal hazards. Sydney feels at home on the coast, where she loves to kayak, eat local seafood, and, of course, get muddy!
